High School Students: Time to Enter Manatee Art Contest

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) invites high school art students across the state to participate in a contest to create a piece of manatee artwork that will be used on the 2011-2012 manatee decal.

Students in grades 9-12 in Florida should coordinate with their school’s art teacher to submit the artwork, because each school may submit no more than five entries. Home-schooled students also are eligible to enter the contest. Contest details and forms are available online at MyFWC.com/Manatee.

Magnet Mania & More Rescheduled

What:             Magnet Mania & More has been rescheduled to January 22, 2011, originally scheduled for January 8, 2011 at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds.  Join Duval County Public Schools for an interactive, fun-filled and informational expo detailing magnet programs and school choice options for the 2011-2012 school year.

Dr. Katie Monnin, author and assistant professor of Literacy at the University of North Florida,” will lead a session “Calling All Parents! Come Learn Why Comics and Graphic Novels are Really Reading!” from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, in the Children’s Department at the main Jacksonville Public Library downtown.

Duval County Public Schools Holiday Closures

For the winter break, all Duval County public schools will be closed from Monday, December 20 through Friday, December 31. DCPS administration offices will be closed from Thursday, December 23 through Friday, December 31.

Both schools and administration offices will re-open on Monday, January 3.

Florida Youth Program to Graduate 158 Teens Saturday

Florida’s Youth ChalleNGe Academy is run by the Florida Department of Military Affairs and the Florida National Guard. Designed on a military model, 16- to 19-year-old high school dropouts encounter a rigorous five-and-a-half month residential phase.  These teens are given a second chance to earn a high school diploma, but this is the first class in which the Academy has partnered with St. Johns River Community College to offer college credits to the students.

Duval County Public Schools is providing winter packets to the community to continue enriching the academic success of all students.

All K-12 students, parents and community members are encouraged to log onto www.duvalschools.org and print out grade appropriate materials for students during the winter break. Math, reading and science worksheets are available, as well as links to online assistance for all students.
