JSO: Some Neighborhoods Have Seen Increase in Home Break-ins During the Holidays
News

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It's the holidays, and police say that means thieves are keeping a close eye on you.

Officer Dewayne Richardson of JSO said some neighborhoods have seen a higher number of home break-ins.  It's something he said is probably related to the holidays.

"There's a chance of opportunity for the suspect to say 'Hey, I may want to break in this house and get some of those electronics,'" Richardson said.

Richardson made several recommendations for citizens to stay safe during the holiday season.

First, be aware of your surroundings, and keep an eye out for strange cars in your neighborhood.

Also, pay attention to people walking around your neighborhood because Richardson said it's possible that "they are checking places they can break into."

If you buy electronics, Richardson said don't leave the empty boxes outside your home when you dispose of them.  "Cut these boxes up and put them inside of a plastic bag, instead of setting it on the side, because when that bad guy wants to break into your home, he has a reason."

Richardson also urged those with home alarm systems to test their systems and make sure they're working properly.
