Register Your Emergency Contact Information Week

If you are involved in a crash, who would you want police to notify?  In Florida, residents have  the ability to make that decision before an emergency strikes. To date, more than 5 million Floridians have registered their  emergency contacts with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.  Gov. Rick Scott signed a proclamation to name Oct. 2 - 8, 2011, Register Your Emergency Contact Information Week in  Florida, and DHSMV is teaming up with the Division of Emergency Management to encourage all Floridians to register  their contacts.

Bank of America to Charge $5 a Month for Debit Cards

NEW YORK (AP) - Bank of America plans to start charging customers a $5 monthly debit card fee.

The fee will be rolled out starting early next year.

A Bank of America Corp. spokeswoman says customers will only be charged the fee if they use their debit cards for purchases in any given month. Customers won't be charged if they only use their cards at an ATM.

Jax Music Video Festival Seeks Local Talent

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Enjoy a good film? Want to see local talent or budding producers?

Or maybe you'd like to submit some creative work of your own?

The Jacksonville Music Video Revival (JMVR) is a program of the 2011 Jax Film Fest showcasing local musicians and filmmakers.

This October the Jacksonville Music Video Revival will join the newly named and re-branded Jax Film Fest lineup.

This year's film fest will feature a full program of local music videos on the big screen as part of Duval's premiere showcase of independent film.

The JMVR began last year to showcase local filmmaking and musical talent.

The hope is to stimulate a "revival" of the art from here in Jacksonville.

In June 2010 the request for music videos began. Videos were submitted at a surprisingly rapid rate.

Local Sam’s Club Raises $42,000 for Shands Jacksonville and Wolfson Children’s Hospital

 Since 1987, Walmart® and Sam’s Club® have been hosting balloon icon campaigns. During the 2011 campaign that ran from May 1 through June 11, the Sam’s Club on Busch Drive was able to raise $42,000 for our local area hospitals, Shands Jacksonville and Wolfson Children’s Hospital, both of which are Children’s Miracle Network hospitals.

Some of my earliest memories I have of my Grandfather are of him in his wood shop in the garage of my grandparents house.  Papa was always making something and I just loved being down there, hanging out with him.  I remember the smells of sawdust and wood glue.  I remember he was always in his overalls and had at least two thick charcoal pencils in his chest pocket at all times.  There was always a saw of some sort going and loudly playing over the sound of the saw was the melodious tunes coming from his old radio.

As the U.S. keeps a close eye on the stock market; CareerBuilder’s survey shows the financial situation for some households is improving. Forty-two percent of workers say they usually or always live paycheck to paycheck, an improvement from 43 percent in 2010 and in line with levels seen back in 2007. The number of workers who have missed a bill payment has decreased year-over-year; one-in-five (20 percent) say they have missed payments on bills in the last year, slightly improved from 22 percent at this time last year. This is according to a new nationwide survey of more than 5,200 workers by CareerBuilder that was conducted from May 18 to June 3, 2011.

Florida's back-to-school sales tax holiday runs this weekend

Florida's sales tax holiday starts Friday at one minute after midnight and lasts through Sunday.

The three-day back-to-school tax holiday eliminates state and local taxes on more than 130 items, including certain clothes, footwear and backpacks costing $75 or less.
