Jacksonville property owners are reminded that low-income exemption applications for the Jacksonville Stormwater Utility (JSU) must be submitted before the July 31, 2011 deadline.  To qualify, a property owner must demonstrate that his or her household has an income level to qualify for assistance. By law, the income threshold for eligibility is 150 percent or less of the current year’s federal poverty level, as determined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Other eligibility criteria are outlined below:

  • Applicant must be property owner
  • Property must be primary residence (homestead)
  • Provide documentation (e.g., paystubs, tax returns, social security statements) to show gross household income is at or below 150 percent of federal poverty level (as determined annually by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services)  – OR –
  • Provide proof of assistance from a social service agency (e.g., Salvation Army, BEAM, Catholic Charities)

In March 2011, the JSU mailed applications to property owners who have applied since 2008 (whether approved or not).  Applications may also be obtained by calling 630-CITY (2489) to have one mailed; by visiting any Senior Center; or by visiting www.coj.net keyword search “About stormwater.”  The application may be completed and returned online (applicants MUST attach the required supporting documentation).

Since 2008, the JSU has received 6,151 applications and awarded $235,000 in exemptions through this program.
