Spotlight on Students and Their Interest on Homeless Pets

Students at Fletcher Middle Participate in the Opening of the Beaches Parade

Four students from Fletcher Middle School participated in the Opening of the Beaches Parade with Friends of Jacksonville Animals (FOJA). The girls were asked to participate by the FOJA beach committee.

In addition to walking the dogs and hyping the crowd during the parade, the girls designed posters, flyers and decorations for the float. The theme was “Rock Star” and they gave the dogs names such as “Mick Wagger” and “Elvis Pawsley.” The girls continued volunteering at FOJA’s adoption event after the parade. Four of the dogs found potential homes thanks to students’ efforts.

This project began in December during a service-learning lesson in the classroom. During a unit on research and communication, the students studied and discussed pet overpopulation.

All are invited to come and tour the LaVilla Organic Garden and Clara White Mission Training Center.  Enjoy a tasting from the gardens provided by the Clara White Culinary Arts center.

Cloth diapers have come a long way in the past ten years. An event, called the Great Cloth Diaper Change 2011, already creating a buzz not only in North America, but all over the world, will take place on Saturday, April 23, 2011 in locations all around the globe. The Great Cloth Diaper Change (http://www.greatclothdiaperchange.com) will set a world record for the most cloth diapers ever changed simultaneously.

Household Hazardous and E-waste Mobile Collection Event this Weekend

The City of Jacksonville Solid Waste Division hosts a series of six household hazardous waste and electronic waste (e-waste) mobile collection events throughout the city each year.  The third in the 2011 series takes place this Saturday.

St. Johns RIVERKEEPER and its community partners are launching an exciting new education campaign to raise awareness about the impact of our actions upon the health of the St John River and to inform and inspire people to adopt river-friendly lifestyle practices.   The goal of the River Friendly Education and Awareness Campaign is to provide the public with informative resources and tools that will help them make more informed choices to better protect their St. Johns River.
