Upcoming Events at MOSH!

Through May 30 – Universe of Science – Experience science in all its hands-on splendor!  The Universe of Science is an interactive science exhibit comprised of individual science stations.  Children – and adults – can launch a hot air balloon, send a rocket soaring into the air, and more as they learn about sound, gravity, magnetism and other physical science principles.  Universe of Science is on display through May 30. 

 

Wednesdays – Half-Price Half Days – Beginning at noon each Wednesday when school is in session, students receive 50% off MOSH's regular admission prices. Reduced rates are $4.00 for students 3-12 and $5.00 for students 13 and over. Students under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Discount may be applied toward college students with id.

 

Fridays – $5 Fridays – Every Friday, come to MOSH to enjoy $5 admission and extended hours. The museum will be open late every Friday until 8 p.m. (Note: Additional discounts or coupons are not permitted.)

 

Fridays – Cosmic Concerts – Experience total-sensory entertainment as laser lights, high-def images and digital sound collide to create a Cosmic Concert!  The Bryan-Gooding Planetarium rocks every Friday night with Cosmic Concert laser light shows at 5, 6, 7 and 8 p.m. Tickets are available at www.moshplanetarium.org or at the door.  Tickets are $5 per person per show; laser glasses cost $1. 

 

Through May 30 – Children of the Universe – Embark on a journey around the solar system!   This innovative exhibit created by local artist Don Trousdell fuses art and science to tell the story of our solar system through the eyes of mythological children living on the planets, sun and moon.  Each original painting explores the fascinating science and mythology associated with these giant orbs.  On display in the Wachovia Community Conference Room.

 

 

FEBRUARY

 

February 11 – Cosmic Concerts – Experience total-sensory entertainment as laser lights, high-def images and digital sound collide to create a Cosmic Concert!  Laser Magic at 5 p.m., Laser Retro at 6 p.m., Laser X Alternative at 7 p.m., and Metallica at 8 p.m.  Each concert costs $5 per person; $1 for laser glasses.  Tickets are available online at www.moshplanetarium.org or at the door.   

 

February 12 – The Shell:  530 Million Years of Inspired Design Opens – The Museum of Science & History has partnered with guest curator Dr. Harry G. Lee for an exhibit in The Loft Gallery on the third floor. The Shell: 530 Million Years of Inspired Design is comprised of more than 1,000 shells from Dr. Lee’s personal collection.  The exhibit showcases the breathtaking beauty and incredible variation of shells found on the First Coast and throughout the world. 

 

February 12 – Bella Luna: Dessert Under the Stars – Bring your valentine to MOSH to enjoy the view of the downtown skyline from MOSH’s rooftop.  Your romantic, child-free evening will include a special valentine-themed Cosmic Concert, music, games, stargazing and time to explore the museum.  Sweet treats and beer and wine will also be served.  Bella Luna will take place from 7 to 10 p.m.  Reservations and pre-payment are required.  Tickets are $45 per couple for the general public and $35 per couple for members.  Call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 240, for details.  Hurry, space is limited and is filling quickly!

 

February 16 – Mother’s Morning Out – This three-hour program, from 9 a.m. to noon, is for 4- and 5-year-olds.  February’s program theme, Science is Super, features the museum’s hands-on Universe of Science exhibit. Each program is $15 per child and includes admission to the museum afterwards for both you and your child(ren).  Call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 226 for required reservations.

February 19 – Black History Celebration Learn about the history of Jacksonville’s prominent African Americans through a variety of performances and presentations.  Activities will include African folk tale storytelling, crafts and live performances by Fort Mose re-enactor James Bullock and actors from Players by the Sea.  The event will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. 

 

February 19 – Brownie Badge Workshop – From 10 to 11:30 a.m., Brownies will work to earn their People of the World badges.  Cost is $9 per girl, $6 per adult and includes museum admission.  Call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 230 to register or register online at www.themosh.org/girl_scouts.html

 

February 21 – Presidents’ Day – From 10 a.m. to noon, MOSH will celebrate our nation’s past leaders in observance of Presidents’ Day.  Actors from Players by the Sea will be the featured guests and will perform interactive plays in the JEA Science Theater at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.  Smaller children can create presidential crafts.  All activities and presentations are included with museum admission. 

 

February 24 – Speaking of Shells – Join malacologist Dr. Harry Lee and local artist David Montgomery as they explore the scientific and artistic diversity of shells.  Dr. Lee, guest curator of The Shell: 530 Million Years of Inspired Design, currently on display in The Loft Gallery on the third floor, is the author of “Marine Shells of Northeast Florida.”  Local artist David Montgomery uses digital animation to illustrate the diversity of shells.  The lecture is at 6 p.m. and is $5 for the public and free for MOSH members, students and teachers with an ID.  RSVP by calling 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 230.

March 2 – Senior Day – From 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. MOSH will present special programming for members of the senior citizen community. The program will include a coffee and cookie reception, a special guest speaker (bring a bag lunch), an educational program, and free time to explore the museum.  The cost is $6 per senior citizen.  Reservations are required and are based on availability. March 7 – Mommy & Me – This hour-long program, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., is designed for 2- and 3-year-olds and their caregivers.  March’s program theme, My Body, features the museum’s The Body Within exhibit.  The program costs $6 per person (ages 2 and up) and includes admission to the museum.  Call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 226 for required reservations.

March 20 – Sons of the Desert Laurel & Hardy Film Screening – Witness Jacksonville film history as you watch films starring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, many of which were filmed right here in Jacksonville.  Admittance is free to MOSH members, “Any Old Port Tent” members, or with paid museum admission.  Films will play immediately following the Sons of the Desert’s monthly meeting held at 2 p.m.

March 24 – Speaking of Nanoscience: The Science of Really Small Stuff – Did you know that nanosilver has disinfecting qualities or that carbon nanotubes could take us on an elevator to space?  Dr. Gregory Wurtz, Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of North Florida, will give an introduction to Nano Science & Technology, explaining how nanoscience is used in our everyday lives and where the future of nanotechnology is headed.  Speaking of Nanoscience is at 6 p.m.  It is $5 for the public and free for MOSH members, students and teachers with an ID.  RSVP by calling 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 230.

March 26 – Nano Day – From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. join the festivities as you learn all about nanoscience – the science of really small stuff.  Interactive booths and demonstrations will take place throughout the museum to engage families and educate visitors about the nanoscale.

 

March 28 – April 1 – Spring Into Science Camps – Join MOSH as we zoom in on the world to learn about the science of small stuff.  Campers will explore the world of nanoscience through hands-on demonstrations and exploration.  Spring Into Science Camp is for Kindergarteners through 5th graders and is $40 per day or $180 for the entire week.  MOSH Members receive a discount.  Camp is from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.;  before- and after-care is available for an additional fee. APRIL

 

April 2 – She’s a Scientist – See how cool a career in science can be, and leave with a new role model! A special guest female scientist will give girls an inside look into a career in science.  Girls will get a chance to interact with a female scientist, try an activity that relates to her field, and see what it takes to put yourself in scientist shoes. April 2 – Maple Leaf Day – From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., MOSH will commemorate the April 1, 1864 sinking of the Maple Leaf, a Union steamship, with a day of activities. 

 

April 4 – Mommy & Me –This hour-long program, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., is designed for 2- and 3-year-olds and their caregivers.  The program costs $6 per person (ages 2 and up) and includes admission to the museum.  Program theme is Earth Day.  Call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 226 for required reservations.

April 28 – Music Under the Stars – Learn about the stars that shine over Jacksonville while enjoying a live musical performance under the stars of the Bryan-Gooding Planetarium.   Event is from 6 to 10 p.m..  The music presentation begins at 7 p.m. and rooftop stargazing is from 8 to 9 p.m.  Admission, which includes museum access, one beer or glass of wine, music presentation, star show, and rooftop stargazing, is $10 for the public and $5 for MOSH Members.  Music provided by arrangement with Friday Musicale.  Call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 230 for required reservations.
