MOSH Calendar of Events

Through January 9 – Prehistoric PredatorsWalk alongside the dinosaurs!  Encounter a soaring Pteranodon with a 23-foot wingspan, a Maiasaura mother caring for her hatchlings, a Pachycephalosaurus, Apatosaurus, Albertosaurus and more in the limited-engagement exhibit, Prehistoric Predators. Dinosaur models are handcrafted based on fossil records and equipped with internal computers, making them look – and sound – like the magnificent beasts that once roamed Earth! 

 

Wednesdays – Half-Price Half Days – Beginning at noon each Wednesday when school is in session, students receive 50% off MOSH's regular admission prices. Reduced rates are $4.00 for students 3-12 and $5.00 for students 13 and over. Students under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Discount may be applied toward college students with id.

 

Fridays – $5 Fridays – Every Friday, come to MOSH to enjoy $5 admission and extended hours. The museum will be open late every Friday until 8 p.m. (Note: Additional discounts or coupons are not permitted.)

 

Fridays – Cosmic Concerts – Experience total-sensory entertainment as laser lights, high-def images and digital sound collide to create a Cosmic Concert!  The Bryan-Gooding Planetarium rocks every Friday night with Cosmic Concert laser light shows at 5, 6, 7 and 8 p.m. Tickets are available at www.moshplanetarium.org or at the door.  Tickets are $5 per person per show; laser glasses cost $1.

 

Through January 30 – People of the St. Johns – Travel back in time to learn about Northeast Florida’s first inhabitants. Guest curator Keith Ashley, Ph.D., an archaeologist at the University of North Florida, has partnered with MOSH to create this new exhibit that explores the everyday life of the people of the St. Johns.  The exhibit, which contains artifacts from MOSH’s and UNF’s collections, also incorporates artwork from present-day local artist Theodore Morris who masterfully captures the essence of these native people.   

 

Through May 30 – Children of the Universe Embark on a journey around the solar system!   This innovative exhibit created by local artist Don Trousdell fuses art and science to tell the story of our solar system through the eyes of mythological children living on the planets, sun and moon.  Each original painting explores the fascinating science and mythology associated with these giant orbs.  On display in the Wachovia Community Conference Room.

 

DECEMBER

 

December 11 & 18 – The Science of Snowflakes: Nano at its Coolest – Watch snowflakes grow in a crystal chamber, make fake snow and even taste it at The Science of Snowflakes. The program is designed to introduce children (and adults) to the idea of nanoscience, the science of really small things like atoms and molecules.  Programs will take place December 4, 11 & 18 at 1:30 p.m. in the JEA Science Theater.

 

December 8 – Mother’s Morning Out – This three-hour program, from 9 a.m. to noon, is for 4- and 5-year-olds.  Each program is $15 per child and includes admission to the Museum afterwards for both you and your child(ren).  Program topic is A Day in Space.  Call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 256 for required reservations. 

 

December 8 – Senior Days – From 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., MOSH will present programming for members of the senior citizen community. The program will include a coffee and cookie reception, a planetarium program, a lunch-and-learn session with a nutritionist (bring your own bag lunch) and free time to explore the museum.  The cost is $6 per senior citizen.  Reservations are required and are based on availability. Call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 229 for details.

December 20-22 & 27-29 – Winter Camps – Need a little more time to finish up your holiday shopping?  Send your kindergartners through fifth graders to MOSH Winter Camp where a new adventure awaits each day! Camp topics are Animals of the Arctic (December 20), Stars of Wonder (December 21), Dirt Detectives (December 22), Snowflake Science (December 27), Dinosaur Daze (December 28) and New Years Around the World (December 29).  Cost is $35 per day or $180 for all six days.  Call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 230 for details or register online at www.themosh.org

 

December 20-22 – SHZAM Camp – MOSH has partnered with the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens and the Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens to offer an enriching, engaging and unique holiday camp with an equally unique name – SHZAM Camp.  This Science, History, Zoo and Art Museum Camp has a shared theme of Science Investigations.  Students will spend one day at each of the institutions (Monday – The Cummer; Tuesday – Jacksonville Zoo; Wednesday – MOSH), using science to unravel mysteries in the art world, the animal world and the field of archeology/paleontology.  Cost is $120 for non-members and $105 for members.  For more information, call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 230.

 

December 24 & 25 – MOSH Closed – MOSH will be closed and will reopen December 26 at 1 p.m.

JANUARY

 

January 3 – Mommy & Me – This hour-long program, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., is designed for 2- and 3-year-olds and their caregivers.  The program costs $6 per person (ages 2 and up) and includes admission to the museum.  Program topic is Cuddly Creatures. January 16 – Sons of the Desert Laurel & Hardy Film Screening – Witness Jacksonville film history as you watch films starring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, many of which were filmed right here in Jacksonville.  Admittance is free to MOSH members, “Any Old Port Tent” members, or with paid museum admission.  Films will play immediately following the Sons of the Desert’s monthly meeting held at 2 p.m. 

 

January 17 – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – Join MOSH as we honor civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy with special activities from 10 a.m. to noon.

January 27 – Making Stuff Workshop: Bacardi’s Sensory Science Learn the science behind making rum in this workshop hosted by Bacardi-Martini Product Development, Inc.  Bacardi’s Senior Beverage Scientist will give an introduction to Sensory Science and will lead a hands-on, rum-based sensory activity from 6 to 8 p.m.  Cost is $10 per person, $5 for members.  You must be 21 years of age or older to participate.  Call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 230 to register.  Space is limited.

FEBRUARY

February 5 – Water Education Festival – FREE DAY– MOSH has teamed up with the City of Jacksonville’s Environmental Protection Board and the St. Johns River Water Management District to present interactive displays, activities, and live performances.  Learn about water conservation and more on this FREE ADMISSION DAY between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.  (Please note: Planetarium programs are $5 per person.)

February 19 – Black History Celebration Help MOSH celebrate Black History Month by honoring local African-American heroes from the past two centuries.  Visitors will learn about the history of Jacksonville’s prominent African Americans through a variety of performances and presentations.  Activities will include African folk tale storytelling, crafts, and live performances.  The event will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. 

 

February 21 – Presidents’ Day –MOSH will celebrate our nation’s past leaders in observance of Presidents’ Day.  Children will learn about our presidential history, create presidential crafts, and test their knowledge of American trivia.  Activities will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 12 p.m.

 

February 26 – Brownie Badge Workshop – From 10 to 11:30 a.m., Brownies will work to earn their People of the World badges. Cost is $9 per girl and $6 per adult which included museum admission.  Call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 230 or register online at www.themosh.org/girl_scouts.html.
